This guide explores the pros and cons of eight popular destinations in the Algarve to help find the perfect place for your holiday.

Lagos

Lagos is perfect if you’re visiting the Algarve for the first time and wanting abit of everything. The historic old town has a wide range of restaurants and bars you can try out whilst you’re there. Lagos is known for its coastline of beaches, cliffs and hidden coves. All of which create fun activities for during the daytime such as boat trips and kayaking. There are also parts of Lagos where you can experience a lively nightlife, particularly during summer, but there are also quieter parts if you prefer that kind of holiday. The main downside is that it is quite far from Faro Airport in comparison to other central Algarve resorts.

Albufeira

Usually popular for the younger audience, Albufeira is one of, if not the most lively, destinations in the Algarve. The strip is known for its bars and nightlife however, the Old Town has a range of shops and restaurants close to the beach. With it being so central, Albufeira is ideal if you want to explore other parts of the Algarve during your holiday. With Albufeira being popular amongst big groups like hen dos or stag dos, there is plenty of accommodation available to suit all group sizes as well as different budgets. One of the reasons Albufeira might not be for you is due to how busy it can be during the summer, if you prefer a quieter holiday, there are other places better suited.

Vilamoura

Vilamoura is particularly popular for people seeking a golf trip, with world-class golf courses located around the resort. If you prefer a more modern and slightly more luxurious holiday, then this could be the place for you. It has a lovely marina in the centre, filled with restaurants and bars overlooking the water. The marina is a gorgeous spot to have a cocktail and watch the world go by. There are also lovely beaches and plenty of entertainment options within reach. Something that might not appeal to you is how Vilamoura has less traditional Portuguese character compared to other areas such as Lagos.

Vale do Lobo

If you’re looking for a more luxurious and relaxed area of the Algarve, Vale do Lobo will be more up your street. The resort is mainly made up of golf courses, leisure facilities, restaurants and a stunning two-kilometre stretch of beach. Staying in one of the Vale do Lobo luxury villas can be particularly suited to families or larger groups looking for extra space and privacy. However, staying in a more luxurious area does tend to come up more expensive than other Algarve towns.

Quinta do Lago

Next door to Vale do Lobo is Quinta do Lago, with a very similar offering. Along with the golf courses and restaurants, it is home to the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Providing easy access to walking trails, wildlife and quieter stretches of coastline. Quinta do Lago is one of the quieter towns in the Algarve compared to the more crowded areas like Albufeira, perfect for a more relaxed holiday. Similarly to Vale do Lobo, it is one of the more expensive areas to stay, but you’re paying for the more luxury experiencer. To make the most of your stay here, renting a car can be useful to explore other towns.

Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is a small town situated on the coast. If you like more of an exploring style holiday with peace and quiet, this Algarve town might be ideal for you. Carvoeiro is perfectly placed for exploring Algarve’s famous cliffs, caves and coastal walks. Known for its sheltered cove, Praia do Carvoeiro beach is located close to the centre, with restaurants, cafes and shops all within walking distance. If you’re looking for a place with a lively nightlife, Carvoeiro is probably not a great fit, as it has limited entertainment options. This makes it better suited to those looking for a quieter holiday with lots of exploring to do.

Tavira

If you’re looking for a more Portuguese traditional side of the Algarve, Tavira is a good option. The town is filled with traditional architecture and historic streets; here you will find restaurants and cafes where you can taste the local cuisine. Tavira is popular for its access to the beaches and islands around the Ria Formosa (some require a short boat journey). Faro

Everyone knows Faro for the airport, and it is usually just the arrival point for most travellers. However, the city does have plenty to offer for a holiday on its own. There is a mix of traditional culture to sightsee and a stunning marina, surrounded by a good selection of restaurants and cafes. Similarly to Tavira, Faro also provides access to the Ria Formosa for travellers wanting to explore the coast. Another benefit is the fantastic public transport, meaning you can visit other areas without having to hire a car. The downside is that it doesn’t have a beach, so it might work better as a city break rather than a holiday.
