4 Days in London: See the Best of the Capital
London is one of the most famous cities in the world, and it probably comes as no surprise to learn that no European city attracts more tourists than the UK’s capital. If you’re not familiar with London, there are an abundance of reasons why visitors flock there all year round: food, culture, landmarks, sporting events, nightlife – the list goes on. But regardless of your reason for visiting, the city can be slightly overwhelming if it’s your first time in London. In this article, we’ve put together a 4-day itinerary that covers all the must-see sights and best activities.
Why Choose London?
As we’ve just said, there are so many different reasons to visit London, and there truly is something for all ages and interests. As a result, you can consider London whether it’s for a solo trip, a couple’s trip, a family vacation or a trip with friends.
If you’re a history buff, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Some of the famous architecture in the city can be traced back a thousand years and some of the pubs have welcomed famous figures in years gone by.
The modern side of London offers premium bars, thriving student areas and a sensational food scene. Then there’s the constant non-stop action of London, where there is constantly an event for visitors to check out. It might be a Premier League football match, an indie music festival or a popular UK stand-up show. Whatever you are into, there’s a good chance London will be hosting an event that appeals to you in the near future.
When’s The Best Time To Visit London?
There’s no getting away from the fact that the UK’s weather is unreliable, and that’s being polite. As a result, many visitors choose to come to London during the summer months, when the chances of sunshine increase, but be aware that warm weather is never guaranteed in the UK!
If you’re not too fussed about warm weather, or you’re trying to escape higher temperatures, you may want to consider visiting London in December when the whole city gets a festive makeover. The colder temperatures actually contribute towards a more festive feel and you may even get to see your first white Christmas!
London 5-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Start your trip by discovering London’s most iconic landmarks, of which you are spoilt for choice. Much of London’s landmarks focus on the Royal Family, so many tourists head to the likes of Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and Westminster Abbey.
You’ll still have plenty of time to visit other popular landmarks such as Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.
The afternoon or early evening is a great time to combine activities with sightseeing. Areas like Covent Garden, Leicester Square and Picadilly Circus offer perfect picture opportunities while also allowing you to sample a traditional British pub or enjoy the London nightlife through swanky bars and date spots.
Day 2
If the weather allows, start your day with a walk along the River Thames – the perfect spot for a morning coffee. There are also plenty of places to grab breakfast, and seeing as you’re in London, you’re in the perfect place to try a full English breakfast. And if food’s your thing, you could dedicate a whole day to sampling London’s food scene.
While we could write a whole essay on places to eat in London, Borough Market allows you to sample a whole host of food stalls in one place.
Day 3
While London is known to be one of the world’s more expensive cities, there are plenty of free activities for you to explore in London. In fact, many of London’s best museums are completely free to enter, and it’s definitely worth spending a morning at one or two of these.
In the afternoon, head to Kensington and spend some time in one of London’s most affluent areas. This is the perfect spot for an hour or two of window shopping, while also being home to some of London’s most stunning properties.
Day 4
If you want to explore London like a true local, you have to spend a day making your way around the city’s local markets. Camden Market is particularly popular with both locals and visitors. Whether you’re there for the street food or the vintage shops, this is a completely unique way to experience London. It’s also the perfect place to pick up all your souvenirs, from handmade ornaments to quirky canvas prints.
London Travel Hacks
If you are feeling anxious about visiting London for the first time, try following these hacks to make sure your trip runs as smoothly as possible.
The Tube: London’s underground tube network is the easiest way to travel around the city. It’s not as complex as you may first think, and you can get around using a contactless bank card. Use the Transport for London website to plan journeys in advance.
Escalator Etiquette: If you’re standing on an escalator, stand on the right. This allows room for commuters to walk (or run) up and down escalators on the left.
Tipping: If you’re travelling from the US, you might want to be aware that tipping isn’t as expected in the UK when planning your UK budget. Most restaurants will include a service charge, although it’s common to leave a small tip on top of this. Don’t worry about tipping taxi drivers, bar staff, coffee shop workers and so on. While they would appreciate a tip, this certainly isn’t expected in the UK.
Final Thoughts
Hopefully that’s enough to convince you to visit London. Whether it’s your first time or hundredth time, there’s always something new to see and do in what is one of the world’s most popular cities.
